Internal Communications Strategy & Execution

Led internal and organizational communications across Denver Health and the Denver Health Foundation—supporting a large, nonprofit, safety-net healthcare system with more than 8,000 employees.

Integrated Healthcare System & Foundation

Overview

My work spanned internal communications, executive messaging, crisis response, and integrated marketing and fundraising communications, requiring clarity, precision and alignment across diverse audiences.

The Challenge

Operating within a complex, fast-paced healthcare environment required communications that were:

  • Clear, accurate and timely

  • Aligned across departments and leadership

  • Accessible to diverse internal audiences across all levels of the organization, including clinical staff, administrators and executives

In addition, the organization faced ongoing change initiatives—including system-wide technology upgrades, public health emergencies and strategic planning—requiring coordinated, high-stakes communication strategies.

Approach

Focused on creating structured, audience-centered communications that supported clarity, alignment and informed decision-making across the organization.

Internal Communications & Messaging

  • Planned, wrote and deployed physical and digital communications for staff, providers and leadership, including two weekly internal newsletters and a coordinated internal signage program

  • Developed messaging aligned with organizational priorities, including mission, vision and strategic initiatives

  • Ensured consistency and clarity across communication channels and departments

Change Management & Complex Communications

  • Led communications for major HR and IT system upgrades, translating complex technical information into clear, actionable messaging

  • Supported organization-wide understanding and adoption of new systems and processes

Crisis & Executive Communications

  • Managed public health emergency communications as part of a cross-functional task force of medical providers and senior leaders

  • Served as one of four rotating Public Information Officers, providing 24-hour crisis communication support and media response

  • Moderated CEO town halls with 400+ attendees, facilitating communication between leadership and staff

Foundation & External Communications

  • Led communications strategy and execution for the Denver Health Foundation, supporting fundraising and donor engagement

  • Managed website, blog, social media, donor communications and integrated marketing efforts

  • Supported a 1,300-guest fundraising gala with entertainment by musical guest Macklemore, which raised $1.4 million for the Anchor Institution hospital and its programs for the under-served

  • Developed executive messaging, including video scripts, talking points and donor communications

My Role

Internal communications manager and strategic communications lead—partnering with executive leadership, clinical teams and foundation stakeholders to develop and deliver clear, aligned messaging across internal and external audiences.

Video Storytelling

Some of the most impactful work I led at Denver Health Foundation extended beyond written communications—into video storytelling designed to capture the human impact of care, community support and philanthropy.

I developed the concepts and storylines for a series of videos used in major events, including the NightShine Gala and Paramedics Awards Celebration. This work involved:

  • Concept development and storyboarding

  • Interview planning and on-camera interviewing

  • Scriptwriting and narrative development

  • Collaboration with videographers on location, tone and visual storytelling

  • Direction of editing and final production

  • Promotion across social media and live event environments

These videos were designed to do more than inform—they were created to move audiences, honor lived experiences and connect donors and community members more deeply to the mission.

Selected Videos

Selected Writing

In addition to video, I developed written storytelling that highlighted patient experiences, donor impact and community-driven initiatives—often navigating sensitive, emotional and high-stakes topics with care and clarity. You can expand the topics below to read some of my stories.

Outcomes

Strengthened clarity, consistency and alignment in communications across a complex healthcare system—supporting informed decision-making, employee engagement and effective communication during both routine operations and high-stakes situations.
